Background of the study:
Western hairstyles have become a prominent cultural phenomenon in Onitsha South, influencing perceptions of beauty among women. Historically, indigenous hairstyles carried deep cultural significance, symbolizing social status, identity, and heritage (Nwachukwu, 2023). However, the rise of global fashion trends and media exposure has led to a growing preference for western hairstyles, which are often associated with modernity and success (Okonkwo, 2024). This shift has created a complex interplay between traditional aesthetics and contemporary beauty standards, affecting self-esteem and cultural identity. Women in Onitsha South are increasingly navigating these dual influences, leading to changes in hairstyling practices that reflect both local and global trends (Chukwuemeka, 2025). This study examines how the adoption of western hairstyles impacts perceptions of beauty, exploring the tension between cultural authenticity and modern influences. It further investigates the social implications of these evolving beauty norms, contributing to a broader understanding of cultural change in a globalized society (Ijeoma, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
The growing influence of western hairstyles in Onitsha South has led to a transformation in beauty perceptions among women, potentially eroding traditional aesthetics and cultural identity. This shift raises concerns about the long-term effects on self-esteem and cultural continuity. There is limited research on how these trends affect local perceptions of beauty, necessitating an investigation into the socio-cultural consequences of adopting western styles (Eze, 2023).
